Dear Friends,
One of the projects I am taking on this year is raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, through Team In Training, by taking part in weekly cycling training events in preparation for the final event in Lake Tahoe – 100 miles! (This should be interesting).
Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. Each donation helps accelerate funding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. More than 823,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 52,910 people in the United States this year.
On last Saturdays ride we had 5 cyclists who are survivors of the disease, which is an inspiration and testimony that research saves lives. These are people just like you and I, who have families and other important undertakings to attend to.
Research funded by the Society has led to advances in chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies such as Gleevec – a drug which is saving lives today. Locally, LLS funds research grants at UC Berkeley, Stanford and UC Davis.
It is tough to ask for money during difficult economic times, but it is ok to support the right charities. A donation in any small amount helps me reach the goal for this year.
