It wasn’t the ride that was hard, it was the length of it. We finished 70 miles yesterday. Thats a record high for myself and many others on the cycle team.
I think I owe alot of the success to my teach coach, Hamid Shoaee. He communicates very well and is always telling us what lies around the corner, so we can be prepared.
Some simple tips to survive a Century:
- Shift often, Shift early
- Remember to eat and drink along the ride. (Check your eating every 10 miles)
- Get accustomed to your bike and food supplies before you get to the Century
- No new food is good food, don’t experiment on Century day
Inventory for a Century:
- Bike (3 rings, not 2)
- Ride packs filled with energy bars, license, insurance card, cell phone, atm card.
- Bento box filled with GU, and SHOT bloks -or- fig newtons
- Two 24oz water bottles filled with water and Cytomax
- Camelback filled with water and Cytomax
- Layered riding clothes (its cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon)
- A mirror so you can see cars and your paceline behind you
- Helmet (these are one-time use if they hit something)
- Cleats
