It wasn’t the ride that was hard, it was the length of it. We finished 70 miles yesterday. Thats a record high for myself and many others on the cycle team.

I think I owe alot of the success to my teach coach, Hamid Shoaee. He communicates very well and is always telling us what lies around the corner, so we can be prepared.

Some simple tips to survive a Century:

Shift often, Shift early

Remember to eat and drink along the ride. (Check your eating every 10 miles)

Get accustomed to your bike and food supplies before you get to the Century

No new food is good food, don’t experiment on Century day

Inventory for a Century:

Bike (3 rings, not 2)

Ride packs filled with energy bars, license, insurance card, cell phone, atm card.

Bento box filled with GU, and SHOT bloks -or- fig newtons

Two 24oz water bottles filled with water and Cytomax

Camelback filled with water and Cytomax

Layered riding clothes (its cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon)

A mirror so you can see cars and your paceline behind you

Helmet (these are one-time use if they hit something)

Cleats

Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. Each donation helps accelerate funding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. More than 823,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 52,910 people in the United States this year.

On last Saturdays ride we had 5 cyclists who are survivors of the disease, which is an inspiration and testimony that research saves lives. These are people just like you and I, who have families and other important undertakings to attend to.

Research funded by the Society has led to advances in chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new, targeted oral therapies such as Gleevec – a drug which is saving lives today. Locally, LLS funds research grants at UC Berkeley, Stanford and UC Davis.

It is tough to ask for money during difficult economic times, but it is ok to support the right charities. A donation in any small amount helps me reach the goal for this year.

If you know someone who has been afflicted with a blood-related cancer, I would love to cycle in their honor. Please let me know and I will wear a bracelet for them on my rides.

On behalf of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, thank you very much for your support. We greatly appreciate your generosity.
